Biography

A broad foundation before orthopedic surgery.

Before orthopedic surgery, Dr. Edwards developed a strong background in science, research, leadership, and technical problem-solving. As an undergraduate, he worked in the Capecchi laboratory at the University of Utah with Nobel Laureate Dr. Mario Capecchi. He also founded and served as president of the Research Club at Utah Valley University, an organization created to promote undergraduate research and academic involvement.

In medical school, Dr. Edwards graduated Magna Cum Laude and received multiple academic and service honors. He was accepted into Sigma Sigma Phi, the osteopathic physician honor society, and later served as president of the organization. During his leadership, the group logged hundreds of community service hours. He also received the Gold TOUCH award twice, a distinction achieved by a very small percentage of medical students, and scored in the top tiers of national medical licensing examinations.

He then completed orthopedic surgery residency training in Miami, where he worked with a large number of orthopedic surgeons across numerous hospitals and surgery centers. That experience exposed him to a wide range of orthopedic subspecialties, fracture patterns, surgical techniques, hospital systems, and patient populations. During residency, he served as Chief Resident, represented his program as an AAOS residency delegate, served on the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and worked as a team physician for college football athletes.

One of his most notable academic achievements during residency was scoring in the 100th percentile nationally on the Orthopedic In-Training Examination, the annual examination used to assess orthopedic knowledge during residency training.

Leadership & Surgical Systems

Experience beyond the operating room.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Edwards has served in hospital leadership roles that require judgment, accountability, and a systems-level understanding of surgical care. His leadership experience includes Chief of Surgery, Director of Anesthesia, Chief of Staff, and hospital board service.

For patients, this means orthopedic care from someone who understands not just the surgery itself, but the entire process around surgery—from evaluation and planning to the operating room, recovery, and follow-up.

Care Philosophy

Clear answers. Practical options. No unnecessary complexity.

Orthopedic problems can be frustrating. Pain, stiffness, weakness, injuries, and loss of mobility affect work, family, recreation, and independence. Dr. Edwards’ approach is to identify the problem, explain it in plain language, and discuss options honestly.

When nonsurgical care is appropriate, the focus may include injections, therapy, bracing, medications, activity modification, or time. When surgery is the right option, the goal is careful planning, realistic expectations, and a treatment plan built around restoring function as safely and efficiently as possible.

What patients can expect

Thorough evaluation: a careful review of symptoms, imaging, goals, and prior treatment.

Plain-language explanations: a clear discussion of what is wrong and what can realistically be done.

Local access: advanced orthopedic care available in Elko whenever appropriate.

Balanced decision-making: surgery when needed, nonsurgical care when that is the better path.

Community & Personal Connection

Committed to Elko beyond the clinic.

Dr. Edwards lives in Elko with his family and is committed to improving the community both inside and outside of medicine. Beyond orthopedic surgery, he has been involved in local nonprofit and community-building efforts focused on creating more family-friendly opportunities in the region.

Outside of work, he enjoys the outdoors, music, flying, skiing, snowboarding, and spending time with his family. That local connection matters: Edwards Orthopedics is not designed to feel like a distant corporate practice. It is a local orthopedic practice built for the people and families of Northeastern Nevada.
